The Virgin Islands Institute of Development provides a forum and focus for action by developing fact-based research and practical policy solutions on issues that matters to the U. S. Virgin Islands
By consequence, the Institute was formed as an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to education, analysis and research on policy issues of concern to the United States Virgin Islands Community. It is guided by the belief that lasting solutions to societal difficulties can only come about through the long-term, systematic, coordinated, collective efforts of informed individuals.
These ideals are the driving force of the Institute aimed at bridging the gap between the governed
and the government by conducting innovative, open-minded inquiry and well reasoned analysis on
which sound policies depend.
In keeping with its mission and vision, the Institute’s primary
focus is dual-fold: policy solutions and information.
We work to identify solution proposals to policy issues facing the U.S. Virgin Islands community. Core policy issue areas include education and youth, health, economic development, science and technology, and governance. We enlist the participation of USVI community stakeholders (located in the U.S. Virgin Islands and abroad) in thought-provoking dialogue and brainstorming sessions on these issues. Then we explore the divergent views representative of their input to identify area(s) of focused research efforts. Under this construct, researchers and technical experts in their respective fields are engaged to produce non-partisan research and policy analysis from which a range of interventions are developed. These may take the form of generalized or targeted advocacy, public education and issue-related initiatives designed to advise/inform decision makers about viable USVI solutions-oriented policy options. In this regard, the Institute serves as a catalyst in building consensus around sound nonpartisan policies aimed at driving positive change for the U.S. Virgin Islands and its people.
A second component of the Institute’s primary focus is serving as a credible source of nonpartisan information on key U. S. Virgin Islands issues and trends through independent research and surveys/polling. The idea here is to probe the most pressing issues of the time and inform the public – particularly policy makers, decision makers and journalists – of the results.
In this regard, The Virgin Islands Institute of Development is the only think tank on USVI issues in North America. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Institute is unique in its ability to provide non-partisan advocacy efforts, public education initiatives and issue campaigns aimed at informing the public and decision makers who make or influence policy affecting the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"You are not here to merely make a living.
You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply,
with greater vision,
with a finer spirit of hope and achievement.
You are here to enrich the world,
and you impoverish yourself
if you forget the errand."
